At least three Afghan policemen were killed as the Taliban militias stormed a police checkpoint in south Afghanistan on Saturday night, an official of Kabul-Kandahar highway police confirmed Sunday.

"Around 30 Taliban insurgents raided a police check post in Akhundkariz area of Zabul province on Kabul-Kandahar highway last night, killing three policemen," Mohammad Nabi Mullahkhil told Xinhua.

The clash and exchange of fire, the official added, lasted one and a half hours, during which a number of rebels were also killed and few others injured.

"Several bodies of the militants were lying on the ground while the militants took their wounded ones with themselves," Mullahkhil added.

Remnants of the former Taliban regime have intensified their attacks ahead of the opening of the first post Taliban parliament slated for Monday.

The militants shot dead a guard of a school and a student in the neighboring Helmand province on Saturday.

Taliban-linked insurgency has claimed the lives of some 1,500 people since the beginning of this year.
