Hong Kong could not tolerate people to use violence for anti-WTO demands, Donald Tsang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said Sunday afternoon.
He made the remarks after visiting the Police Catering and Support Center at the Harbor Road Sports Center in Wan Chai district.
Donald Tsang said Hong Kong police had used the minimum force in response to protesters' violent action and even to their physical attacks on policemen in every respect.
Anti-WTO protesters tried to break through police cordon lines and clashed with police Saturday night.
During the clash, 114 persons were injured, including 44 policemen. Around 900 protesters were detained.
Donald Tsang warned the anti-WTO demonstrators not to resort to violence again, otherwise they would be dwelt with in a decisive manner.
He also said if the anti-WTO protesters stage demonstrations according to law, they can continue to express their views.
He emphasized that as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Hong Kong is duty-bound to promote free trade in the world, saying, "It is worthwhile for Hong Kong to host the Sixth WTO Ministerial Conference."
Thousands of demonstrators continued anti-WTO demonstration Sunday afternoon as the conference entered its last phase.
