Anti-WTO demonstrations continued Sunday afternoon with thousands of protesters marching from the Victoria Park to the public activity area in Wanchai, a downtown area in Hong Kong.
Most of the protesters came from Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia. After they arrived in Wanchai, some demonstrators jumped into the sea and shouted anti-WTO (World Trade Organization) slogans
Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang Sunday warned the demonstrators not to resort to violence again, otherwise they would be dealt with in a decisive manner.
Hong Kong police stepped up their protective measures with armored vehicles, helicopters and large blockades. But the demonstration went on peacefully.
Demonstrations turned violent Saturday. Around 114 were injured during the clash between protesters and police Saturday night. Demonstrators hit policemen with bamboo sticks, and police used pepper spray and smoke grenades to disperse protesters.
Traffic in the area was severely affected, with a halt in bus and tram services. The Wanchai MTR station was also closed.
The police called on citizens not to go to the demonstration area, though most of the traffic resumed Sunday.
