font size

China will build a database on Qinghai-Tibet plateau, based on findings of a recently finished medium scale regional geochemistry survey, according to the China Geological Survey (CGS) which was issued on Wednesday.

Geologists will start by sorting the files according to categories such as geological structures, eras, and then compile geochemistry, geological and mineral resources charts.

A serial of maps and reports will be added, said Meng Xianlai, head of the CGS. It is to serve the purposes of backup resources survey, plateau environment protection and homeland exploitation, economic development as well as sovereignty protection, said Meng.

Scientists also plan to carry out comprehensive researches and special researches in related key fields, including resources, energy and environment.

Widely recognized as the world's third pole, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau covers an area of 1.52 million square km, almost a sixth of China's territory.

The 1: 250,000 geochemistry survey of the vast plateau filled the last blank in the medium scale geochemistry map of the country's land.

China has invested 300 million yuan (about 37.5 million US dollars) to the survey project since 1999.
