HK Official: LegCo members of opposition camp should be accountable to HK's history, citizens
font size

Hong Kong Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Stephen Lam said at the Legislative Council (LegCo) Wednesday that the Legislative Council members of the opposition camp placed obstacles in the future development of democracy in Hong Kong and that they should be accountable to the history and citizens of Hong Kong.

He made the remarks after voting a proposal on amendment of the Method for Selecting the Chief Executive in 2007. He said the motion is very important.

Lam stressed that the opposition camp opposed the motion and that the act would damage Hong Kong's democracy process after 2007.

While speaking before the voting, Lam said that the government's Package of Proposals for the Methods for Selecting the Chief Executive in 2007 and for Forming the Legislative Council in 2008 have gained the support of over 60 percent of Hong Kong citizens and have also obtained signatures for support of nearly 800,000 citizens.

Lam also urged the LegCo members not to act against the will of the public, otherwise they should account for the voting result to Hong Kong's history and citizens as well.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government submitted to the LegCo the motion for amendment on the Method for Selecting the Chief Executive in 2007 on Wednesday. Though the motion won support of over half of the 60-seat chamber, the LegCo, it was not adopted as it did not win a two-thirds majority of votes, a requirement in this regard set by the Basic Law.
