A workshop was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Shu Tong, one of the best-known Chinese calligraphers and the first chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers' Association.
Wu Guanzheng, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee's Political Bureau, sent a message to the workshop, saying that Shu's revolutionary spirit and calligraphic art are a valuable treasure which is worthwhile for younger generations to learn and carry forward.
Li Tieying, vice chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, and State Councilor Chen Zhili attended the meeting.
In her speech, Chen called Shu an older-generation revolutionary, people's artist, and pathbreaker and founder of the calligraphic achievements of New China.
Born in 1905, Shu joined in the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1926 and contributed to the victory of the Chinese Revolution. CPC leader Mao Zedong called him the "calligrapher on horseback".
Shu died of illness in Beijing in 1998.
In addition to this workshop, a photography and calligraphy show was also held in the city. Furthermore, The Cultural Heritage Publishing House has published a collection of Shu's calligraphic works.
