Manufacturing becomes Beijing's backbone industryManufacturing accounted for 88.6 percent of Beijing's total industrial output value, a recently-publicized general investigation of economic development has shown. The output value of telecommunications electronic computers and other electronic equipment, manufacturing of transportation and traffic equipment, ferrous metal smelting and processing industry, raw chemical materials and manufacturing of chemical products, petroleum refining and coking and nuclear fuel processing industry reached 320.01 billion yuan (39.5 billion U.S. dollars), making up 53.6 percent of Beijing's total industrial output value. Beijing had 37,200 industrial enterprises by the end of last year, accounting for 14.6 percent of Beijing's total corporate enterprises. The total industrial output value reached 597.48 billion yuan, 3.6 times the figure for 1995. Of the total industrial output value, state-owned enterprises accounted for 19.2 percent, private businesses accounted for 7.5 percent, enterprises financed by Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan businessmen made up 8.7 percent and foreign-funded enterprises contributed 29.6 percent. High-tech industrial output value reached 202.44 billion yuan, accounting for 33.9 percent of Beijing's total industrial output value.
