Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong sent letters of condolence respectively on the death of Wang Daohan, according to Channel News Asia report on Wednesday night.

Lee said in his letter that Wang, as president of the Chinese mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, had carried out the responsibility entrusted to him by the Chinese leadership with considerable patience, skill and resolve.

He noted that Wang, the mainland's former chief negotiator with Taiwan, played a critical role in forging the "1992 consensus", which led to the historic Wang-Koo meeting in Singapore in the following year.

Wang and Koo Chen-Fu, then chairman of the board of directors of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation who died early this year, opened the door to peace and cross-straits reconciliation, Lee said.

He added that the world will remember Wang's invaluable contributions as he was patient and steadfast to resume meaningful interactions to bring about peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.

In a separate letter, Goh echoed Lee in emphasizing Wang's role in forging the "1992 consensus", adding that Wang was determined to bring about reconciliation, peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.

Wang died of illness in Shanghai in the morning of Dec. 24 at the age of 90.
