US says Iraqi elections fair, no need for re-run
font size

The United States said on Wednesday that the just-concluded Iraqi parliamentary elections were fair and there was no need for a re-run of the elections.

"So far, the views on the elections in Iraq have been positive, both by the United Nations, as well as other observers," White House spokesman Trent Duffy said at a briefing in Crawford, Texas, hometown of U.S. President George W. Bush.

"At this point, I do not think most are suggesting that there needs to be a re-run because it is the belief that the elections were fair. And that is our view as well," Duffy said.

The spokesman said that Iraq needs to develop the durable, lasting institutions that will ensure its democracy.

The comments came after thousands of Sunni Arabs demonstrated in Iraqi capital Baghdad against the partial results of the Dec. 15 parliamentary elections announced by the electoral commission and called for a re-vote.
