Two signed articles will be published on Friday's People's Daily and Guangming Daily, two leading Chinese newspapers based in Beijing, in memory of Wang Daohan, the Chinese mainland's top negotiator on Taiwan affairs who passed away last Saturday at the age of 90.
"Mr. Wang has left us forever...but he has left behind a rich legacy and unforgettable demeanor," wrote Xu Shiquan, vice president of the mainland-based National Taiwan Studies Society, in an article to be published on the People's Daily.
After becoming president of the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) in 1991, Wang had poured in all his energy, wisdom and experience and had played an irreplaceable role in pushing forward the great cause of the reunification of China, Xu wrote.
He said Wang had demonstrated the mainland's policies toward Taiwan with his own words and acts in a lively and vivid manner, and had served as an "image ambassador" for the mainland's Taiwan policies.
Wang had dealt in a dialectic way with the Taiwan issue with a view to the global situation and the overall development strategy of China, he added.
"The energy and wisdom he spent on the development of cross-Straits relations will sure continue to work in the historical process of the reunification of China," he wrote.
Huang Renwei, a professor with the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, also paid a high tribute to Wang in an article to be published on the Guangming Daily.
Many of Wang's strategic thoughts and innovative viewpoints can really stand the test of both time and practice, wrote Huang.
Wang's unswerving pursuit of the peaceful reunification of China and the painstaking efforts he had made to that effect were far beyond the imagination of ordinary people, he recalled.
"The intellectual legacy he left behind will encourage us to go ahead, and all the efforts he made for the reunification of China will blossom and bear fruits in the end," he added.
