Zambian surgeons operate with motor bike lampsZambian surgeons operated with motor bike lamps during a power black-out on Wednesday evening, Zambia Daily Mail reported on Friday. The surgeons at the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH), the biggest hospital in the southern African country, were forced to use the head lamps to conduct an emergency operation after the nationwide power failure caused by severe lightning. According to sources at UTH, the operating theater does not have torches which are used in case of power failure. The sources said a motor bike was taken to the theater room to provide light for the surgeons to conduct the operation successfully. The power black-out also affected mining and other industries. Zambian Minister of Energy and Water Development Felix Mutati said the loss of power was as a result of major disturbance on the high voltage transmission system of the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO).
