Unregistered doctors draw complaints in Nepal
font size

An indefinite number of doctors, who failed in the examinations taken by the Nepal Medical Council (NMC), are drawing complaints that they have been practicing medicine illegally, an official at NMC said here Tuesday.

"It is mandatory for every doctor in Nepal to pass the examination taken by the NMC to register them in NMC, the apex body to inspect and monitor the activities of medical doctor and medical education of Nepal," Gopal Khanal, registrar at the NMC, told reporters.

NMC has received some complaints about the doctors who are involved in practices without passing the NMC exams or registering with it, Khanal added.

"We have just started monitoring the medical activities in the country," Khanal noted, adding, "After the completion of inspection, the NMC will take necessary legal action against those who are involved in the unethical practices."

The NMC exams are taken in every three months. Among the total candidates, some 60 to 90 percent doctors pass the exam, Khanal noted.

According to NMC, there are total of about 5,500 doctors registered with the NMC.
