Myanmar top leader Senior-General Than Shwe on Wednesday urged his people to strive for an enduring state constitution in order to build Myanmar into a new modern and developed nation.
Than Shwe, chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, made the remarks in his message on the occasion of the country's 58th Independence Day, which falls on Wednesday.
Detailed basic principles are being laid down to draw up a new state constitution through the ongoing national convention, which forms the first step of the country's seven-point roadmap to democracy announced in 2003.
Than Shwe called for working for the success of the roadmap with union spirit and nationalistic spirit, saying that the roadmap, which paves way for the transition to democracy, is being implemented step by step.
Pointing out that some big nations are essaying to interfere in the domestic affairs of others, he stressed that it is the onus of new generation to safeguard the national independence and sovereignty.
He also emphasized that 17 ethnic armed groups have returned to the legal fold and are now taking part in the national development tasks.
He elaborated in his message some achievements made in various sectors since the government took office in 1988.
With regard to international affairs, Than Shwe noted that constantly practicing independent and active foreign policy, Myanmar has always looked forward to maintaining goodwill relations with world nations based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, while the country is having friendly ties with neighboring countries.
He added that the country is also actively participating in the United Nations and international organizations for world peace, security and development.
On Wednesday morning, a state flag hoisting and saluting ceremony was held at the People's Square to mark the occasion.
The government on Wednesday conferred many religious titles to hundreds of religious figures including venerable monks and nuns, as well as medals of commendation to thousands of person who have made excellent performances in their respective sectors.
Myanmar regained independence from the British colonialists on Jan. 4 ,1948.
