    Sharon still in critical condition despite slight improvement

    Geopark opened in south China city

    The photo taken on Jan. 7, 2006 shows the Ma'anling crater, a main scenic spot in the Shishan Volcanic Cluster National Geopark in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province. The geopark, together with the first Haikou volcanic culture and tourism festival, was opened here Saturday.

    Relief efforts underway in snowfall-hit Xinjiang

    A herdsman pets a sheep that is nearly frozen to death due to the severe weather in Fuyun county of Altay in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Jan. 6, 2006. Heavy snowfall hit most part of the region with a drastic temperature drops since Dec. 29 last year, leaving herdsmen and their livestock stranded. Immediate relief efforts have been deployed by the local government.
