Boeing won net orders for 1,002 civil airplanes in 2005, setting a new annual sales record.
A total of 72 buyers including cargo airline companies, passenger airline companies, leasing companies and private customers placed orders for Boeing jets in 2005. Boeing 737, 777 and 787 set their annual sales record with net orders for 569, 154 and 245 planes respectively.
The previous sales record for 737s was 438 in 1996; 116 for 777s in 2000 and 56 for 787 in 2004.
Boeing's previous net orders record was created in 1988 when 877 airplanes were sold. But that number actually includes planes sold by McDonnell Douglas. After merging with McDonnell Douglas in 1997, Boeing changed its order charts to include planes sold by McDonnell Douglas. In 2004, Boeing won net orders for 272 civil planes.
