The U.S. government on Tuesday extradited an Indonesian fugitive who is wanted for embezzling about 139 million U.S. dollars.
"Following a joint operation by the Indonesian National Police and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), David Nusa Wijaya, an Indonesian fugitive from justice, was returned to Indonesia today from the United States," the US embassy said in an emailed message to Xinhua.
Wijaya, 44, a former director of Jakarta-based Servita Bank, has been convicted for graft and sentenced to eight years in jail by the Indonesian Supreme Court in 2003.
Following a request from the Indonesian government, Wijaya was located in the United States on Friday by the FBI, and returned to Indonesia today in the company of Indonesian police and FBI officials, said the embassy.
"The United States Government is pleased to be of assistance to Indonesia in this matter," it said.
"The US government understands that returning fugitives and stolen assets from abroad in corruption cases is a top law enforcement priority in Indonesia, and looks forward to cooperating with Indonesia in other cases in the future," it said.
