At least six policemen were killed and three others injured when the anti-government guerrillas attacked a police check post in mid-western Nepal on Friday evening, local police office said.

The assailants opened fire at the policemen at the busy BP chowk of Nepalgunj city, some 700 km west of Kathmandu, at around 6:00 p.m. local time (1215GMT), local police office said in a statement.

The guerrillas also attacked a team of security personnel stationed at Jamunaha police post near Nepal-India border on Friday evening, the statement added.

Over 12,000 Nepalese people have been killed since the anti- government insurgency took place in the Himalayan kingdom in February 1996.
