32,000 Nepali students barred from appearing in SLC sent-up exams

Around 32,000 students of Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts of Kathmandu Valley have been prevented from appearing in their School Leaving Certificate (SLC) sent-up exams after the Nepali government imposed a day-long curfew on Friday, Radio Nepal reported Saturday.

In an attempt to thwart a major demonstration of seven agitating political parties, the government on Thursday evening announced to impose daytime curfew from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday in Kathmandu Valley.

The postponed exam will be held a day after the completion of earlier published schedule of SLC sent-up exams, the state-owned radio quoted Ministry of Education as saying.

As the regular sent-up examinations are conducted by various educational organizations like the Private and Boarding Schools Organization Nepal, Nepal Teachers Organization, among others, the subjects of the canceled exams varied according to different boards. While some had mathematics exams, others had Nepali or English.

The students appearing for the sent-up examinations had little information about the curfew as the government notice came late at night on Jan. 19

But Harish Chandra Yadav, Lalitpur District education officer, said: "The concerned organizations were informed about the postponement of the examinations."

Kathmandu district has around 24,000 sent-up examinees, Lalitpur has 8,000 regular and 500 private examinees. The examinations of the community schools started from Jan. 16, while the examinations under private educational bodies started Jan. 19.

Altogether 4,80,000 students have filled up the forms for the SLC sent up examinations this year.
