Malaysia's eastern state of Sarawak will host its fourth World Eco-fiber and Textile Forum ( WETF) in May this year to promote knowledge, use and collection of eco-fiber and dyes, according to a press release from the state available on Thursday.
The event, co-organized by Society Atelier and Sarawak Craft Council, aims to promote, share and acquire knowledge on the use of natural fibers and dyes, encourage the use of natural, sustainable material in the creation of arts and crafts as well as conserve the traditional works, said the press release from Sarawak Tourism Board.
The event, with the theme of "Textile Traditions Today", is also designed to encourage and coordinate research into traditional use of natural fiber and dyes as well as to foster cultural exchange among the forum participants and exhibitors.
Meanwhile, a gala fashion show and International Textile Exhibition/Bazaar will also be held during the three-day event.
WETF Director Heidi Munan said that more than 300 weavers, artisans, scholars and collectors are expected to participate in the forum to be held at Kuching, capital of Sarawak.
Sarawak hosted three such forums in 1999, 2001 and 2003 respectively. Hand painted, printed and decorated textile was the topic of discussion at the 2003 forum, the event organizer said.
