Mayors elected unopposed in 22 municipalities in NepalMayors of 22 municipalities and deputy mayors of 20 municipalities have been elected unopposed in Nepal, an official at the Election Commission (EC) of Nepal said here Monday. "The posts for two deputy mayors remained vacant as no candidate registered their nominations for the posts among those municipalities where mayors were elected unopposed," Tej Muni Bajracharya, spokesperson at EC, told reporters. The EC on Sunday published the final list of candidates and provided election symbols to the candidates for the municipal election scheduled for Feb. 8, Bajracharya noted. A total of 3,654 candidates out of 4,146 posts are in election fray in the 58 municipalities across the country, Bajracharya revealed. The candidates will start publicity campaign from Monday and they will be able to continue it till the night of Feb. 5, he added. According to the EC, there are a total of 1,942,999 voters in one metropolitan city, four sub-metropolitan cities and 53 municipalities in 43 districts of Nepal. Source: Xinhua |
