Japan reiterates one-China policyJapan's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday reiterated that Japan will stick to the One China Policy. The Foreign Ministry made the remarks after Taiwan's leader Chen Shui-bian said on Sunday that he is to consider abolishing the island's National Unification Council and its guidelines on reunification. "Regarding these issues, certainly what is most important is to preserve and enhance the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait, " Tomohiko Taniguchi, deputy press secretary said Tuesday afternoon, according to a Foreign Ministry fax sent to Xinhua. "It would be our strong desire that any dispute be settled through dialogue," Taniguchi said. He reiterated the position that Japan "would not want any status quo to be broken by any unilateral action from both sides and that on military or political confrontation should happen."
