EU lawmakers say aid to Palestine can go on if Hamas renounces violence
font size

The European Parliament on Thursday adopted a resolution saying that the EU should remain the biggest aid donor to Palestine on condition that the Hamas-led government renounces violence and recognizes Israel.

In a vote in Brussels, members of the European Parliament urged Hamas leaders to commit themselves to peaceful negotiations for a two-state solution in cooperation with the Middle East Quartet -- the United States, UN, the European Union (EU) and Russia.

The EU should continue to assist Palestinian economic development and the democratic process and the international community should focus on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in order to prevent further radicalization, the resolution says.

Hamas is regarded as a terrorist organization by the EU.
