The Nepali anti-government guerrillas fired at the house of ward chairman Tribeni Majhi, who was elected unopposed from Biratnagar Municipality in the forthcoming municipal elections, killing one civilian and severely injuring Majhi in eastern Nepal, local police office said here Friday.

"A civilian, who had reached Majhi's resistance to congratulate him, died on the spot after the guerrillas opened a fire at Majhi's house at the city of Morang district, some 400 km east of Kathmandu, on Thursday," District Police Office said in a press statement.

Majhi is undergoing treatment at local Koshi Zonal Hospital, and is out of danger, the statement quoted the hospital source as saying.

Meanwhile, the guerrillas bombed the houses of mayoral and deputy mayoral candidates of Tikapur city of far-western Kailali district, some 800 km west of Kathmandu on Thursday. The guerrillas forced the families out of the house before exploding bombs, local police office said.

Similarly, guerrillas bombed the houses of mayoral candidate of central Birgunj and Bidur cities, and the unopposed elected mayor of western Kapailvastu city on Thursday.

On Thursday afternoon, a policeman was seriously injured after the guerrillas shot him at Itahiri city of eastern Sunsari district, neighboring Morang district.
