Israeli warplanes pound southern Lebanon
font size

Israeli army mounted an air strike on southern Lebanon on Friday in response to rocket attacks from Hezbollah militants, security sources said.

The air strike came shortly after Hezbollah militants fired rockets at an Israeli army post in the disputed Shebaa Farms area near the border area in southern Lebanon, which wounded at least one Israeli soldier.

Friday's trading of fire came two days after a Lebanese shepherd was allegedly killed by Israeli troops in the border area.

Hezbollah, a Shiite militia movement, has been attacking Israeli targets constantly over the border area. Four Hezbollah guerrillas were killed and 11 Israeli soldiers wounded in November 2005 near the area.

The Shebaa Farms area was captured by Israel from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war. The United Nations says it belongs to Syria, but Lebanon claims it with Damascus consent.
