More than 51 million people returned to work or school by highways on Sunday, nearly a million and a half more than Saturday's total, according to the Ministry of Communications.
The ministry said the passenger-flow was mainly from small cities to large cities. Most migrant workers traveled from Henan, Jiangxi, Sichuan and Anhui provinces, the country's major sources of migrant workers, to the Yangtze River Delta area, the Pearl River Delta area, Beijing and Tianjin, the country's major prosperous areas.
Traffic in major sea traffic areas, such as Bohai Bay, the Qiongzhou Strait and the Yangtze River, was smooth on Sunday.
According to the weather forecasts that the China Meteorological Administration and the ministry jointly issued, most of China will have snow, sleet or rain Sunday. It is also forecast that Bohai Bay will have heavy snow.
The ministry urged local transport departments to pay attention to the weather to ensure smooth transport operations.
The Spring Festival is a time when millions of Chinese travel to reunite with their families. This year's festival fell on Jan. 29 and ended on Feb. 4.
