Four declared suspects in Hilton case in Indonesia

Indonesian prosecutors at the Attorney General's Office announced three top officials and one businessman are suspects in a 1.9 trillion rupiah (203 million U.S. dollars) graft case involving the Hilton Hotel, a local media reported here Tuesday.

Chief prosecutor Hendarman Supandji would only identify the suspects by their initials: RJK, RKY, AM and PNS.

The four were implicated in irregularities in the Hilton Hotel's use of 13 hectares of prime state land in the Bung Karno Stadium grounds from 1973 to 2003 and later for an extension granted until 2023.

The issue of the Hilton's building use permit extension allegedly violated standard procedures because it was not approved by the State Secretariat.

The Hilton Hotel was established in 1971 by the government under the management of PT Indobuildco.

The Attorney General Office team has quizzed several high- profile figures in connection with the case, including former Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin; two former state secretaries, Muladi and Alirahman; a former head of BPN, Soni Harsono; and a member of the House of Representatives, Mahadi Sinambela, the Jakarta Post said.

Hendarman told the Post that an obstacle to the investigation was the requirement that the President must give prosecutors permission to interrogate state officials.

"We have asked the President permission to further interrogate one suspect and the attorney general has signed the letter, so this is in process," Hendarman said.
