Thai teacher shot dead in southern insurgent violence

A teacher was shot dead in Thailand 's southern border province of Yala Tuesday morning, while over 130 schools in Yala remain closed this week due to teachers' continuous fear for their safety.

Teacher Rangsarit Dokmai, 42, was shot multiple times in the head and body by unidentified gunmen in Yala municipality, the Thai News Agency said.

Rangsarit was going to work at the Dharmmawitthaya Foundation School Tuesday morning when two young assailants approached him and escaped on a motorcycle without license plates after shooting him to death.

Despite the continuing death toll, the situation is under control, according to Adul Saengsingkaew, Provincial Police Region 9 Commissioner, who said that security has been stepped up to protect teachers.

Adul said that Commanding General of the Fourth Army Area Command Ongkorn Thongprasom had met with governors of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala -- the country's three troubled southernmost provinces -- to discuss improving security for teachers.

Tightened security would also be given to teachers who travel to school and return home at unscheduled times, he said.

Thai authorities have identified more suspected insurgents and located their hideouts and weapons caches, Adul was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, in a separate insurgent attack in Narathiwat, the police are tracking a teenager who planted a roadside bomb in Su- ngai Kolok municipality Tuesday morning.

The bomb suspect's picture was recorded on a closed circuit television installed nearby.

No one was wounded in the bomb attack, but some vehicles -- including a police car -- were damaged.
