Yan Jiesan, a veteran of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), died of illness in Beijing on Jan. 29 at the age of 101, Xinhua was told on Thursday.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and other senior governmental and military officials showed their condolences on Yan's death in different ways.

In 1929, Yan joined the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army led by the Communist Party of China (CPC). Since then, he had taken a series of positions in the CPC-led armed forces, including vice president of the PLA Logistics Academy and advisor of the PLA General Logistics Department.
