Chinese Americans refute Chen Shui-bian's "Taiwan independence" remarks
font size

Taiwan authority leader Chen Shui-bian has become a troublemaker by making a series of "Taiwan independence" remarks recently, damaging stability across the Taiwan Straits and peace in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large, an organization of Chinese Americans said in a statement on Thursday.

The Washington-based National Association for China's Peaceful Unification said in a statement that Chen Shui-bian's political integrity and personal conduct have been put in doubt since the poor performance of the Democratic Progressive Party in Taiwan's county heads elections at the end of last year, and his reputation has fallen to all time low.

Under such circumstances, Chen Shui-bian still refuses to cater to the public opinion to improve cross-Straits relations so as to invigorate Taiwan's sluggish economy, the statement said.

Instead, Chen Shui-bian has made a series of "Taiwan independence" remarks since the New Year's Day, such as abolishing the "National Unification Council" and the "National Unification Guidelines" and "applying for United Nations membership under the name of Taiwan," which are very provocative and fully reveal his "Taiwan independence" position.

The anti-secession law adopted by China's National People's Congress in March last year has played an effective role in checking "Taiwan independence" separatist activities, the statement pointed out.

Since the visits to the mainland by leaders of several political parties in Taiwan last year, the statement added, the Chinese government has taken a series of measures that are beneficial to Taiwan compatriots, which demonstrates the sincerity and affection of the compatriots on the Chinese mainland towards Taiwan compatriots, the statement said.

These measures have won widespread support among Taiwan compatriots, and contributed significantly to the development of the cross-Straits situation towards peace and stability, it noted.

The statement said the National Association for China's Peaceful Unification resolutely supports the U.S. government and Congress' adherence to the one-China policy and opposition to "Taiwan independence."

The statement called on the American people to keep vigilant against the "Taiwan independence" separatist activities by Chen Shui-bian, who has become a troublemaker in the healthy development of U.S.-China relations.

It also called on overseas Chinese to get united to resolutely oppose the separatist activities of Chen Shui-bian and other separatist forces, and to jointly safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, and the peace in the Asia-Pacific region and the whole world.
