For the first time in Nepal, a total of 10 women candidates including three for the office of Mayor and seven for the office of Deputy Mayor have been elected throughout the country in the recently concluded municipal elections.
Among the elected mayoral candidates are Mayor of Bhaktapur Municipality Sumitra Madhikarmi, Bishnudevi Rawal, Mayor of Tikapur Municipality, Kailali District and Mayor of Dhangadhi Janak Kumari Kunwar, the Election Commission (EC) said here Sunday.
Not a single woman mayoral or deputy mayoral candidate was elected in the local bodies' election held in 1992 and 1997 following the restoration of multi-party democracy in 1990 in the country.
"A total of 306,280 of the total 1,443,310 voters in 36 municipalities across the country cast their ballots in the elections held on Wednesday," EC said in a press statement.
