A district court on Indonesia's resort island of Bali on Monday sentenced an Australian man to a life term in jail for drug smuggling only hours after handing down the same punishment to his countrywoman for a similar case.
Scott Anthony Russel, 20, was found guilty of attempting to smuggle more than 10 kg of heroin along with eight compatriots from the island to Australia.
He and four other suspects were arrested on April 17 at Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport with some 8.3 kg of heroin being strapped in their bodies.
From Russel alone, police and immigration officials seized 1.3 kg tapped in his legs.
Four suspects of the so-called Bali Nine were arrested at a hotel on Kuta beach area when preparing for "another shipment."
The same court also gave a life sentence to Renae Lawrence, 28, the lone woman in the group, earlier in the day.
Prosecutors have sought death penalty for two suspects, life sentence for six others and 20-year imprisonment for Renae.
