HK Exchange Fund foreign assets up 33.5 billion HK dollars

The Hong Kong Exchange Fund's foreign assets amounted to 918.4 billion HK dollars (118 billion U. S. dollars) in January, up 33.5 billion HK dollars on December, the Monetary Authority said on Tuesday.

The Monetary Base, comprising Certificates of Indebtedness, Government-issued currency notes and coins in circulation, the aggregate balance of the banking system and Exchange Fund bills and notes issued, amounted to 303.8 billion HK dollars (39.18 billion U.S. dollars), according to a government press release on Tuesday.

Private sector claims amounted to 81.7 billion HK dollars (10. 54 billion U.S. dollars).

Foreign liabilities, representing mainly obligations under repurchase agreements, amounted to 1.5 billion HK dollars (193 million U.S. dollars).
