Super fat cat's "waist" measures 77 cm
The photo taken on Feb. 16, 2006 shows a super fat cat at Xu Jirong's home in Qingdao, a coastal city in east China's Shandong Province. Xu said his nine-year-old pet weighs 15 kilograms and that its "waist" measures around 77 centimeters, longer than a girl's. The cat likes meat but does not eat fish. It eats one steamed bread and half a bowl of chicken heart and some pork every day.

Preval declared Haitian president after deal
Supporters of Rene Preval hold a rally in Port-Au-Prince, the Haitian capital, Feb 15, 2006. Rene Preval was declared Haitian president on Thursday after authorities changed the way blank ballots are counted. Preval, 61, received 51.15 percent of the votes, based on 96 percent of the voting stations counted, after a last-minute decision of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) to throw out 85,000 "blank" votes, said Max Mathurin, the CEP head, on Haitian radio in the middle of the night.

Bodies of Chinese engineers brought to Karachi
Pakistanis carry the body of a Chinese engineer in a hospital in Balochistan, Feb 16, 2006. The bodies of the three Chinese killed in Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan were brought to a hospital early Thursday morning in the country's southern city of Karachi. The bodies will be brought back to China by a chartered plane in a few days, according to Chinese consulate officials.

Qinghai-Tibet Railway to begin cargo transportation

Cargo transportation will be available as of March on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway -- the highest in the world, an official in charge of the project said on Thursday. The 1,956-km-railway, linking Xining, capital of northwest China's Qinghai Province, and Lhasa across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, will launch a full-route trial operation on July 1.

China's first joint-stock commercial bank opens in Tianjin
Chairman of the Bohai Bank Yang Zilin draws the eye of lion (a traditional way to pray for luck) at the bank's opening ceremony in Tianjin, north China, Feb. 16, 2006. The Bohai Bank, the first national joint-stock commercial bank approved by the Chinese government since 1996, started operation Thursday. As the first national commercial bank headquartered in Tianjin, the bank is also the first of its kind that ushered in overseas strategic investors in the preparatory stage.

15 killed in carbon monoxide poisoning
A woman receives treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning in a hospital in Yanbian, Northeast China's Jilin Province February 16, 2006. A large-scale carbon monoxide poisoning hit residents living in bungalows in the region, killing 15 and hospitalizing 32 others, 8 of whom are in critical situations. Experts attributed the deaths and illnesses to unusually low atmospheric pressure and increased rain and humidity, which trapped carbon monoxide from burning coal close to the ground, the China Broadcasting Station reported.
