Saed Siam, a Hamas member of the newly elected Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), hailed on Saturday the first parliament session as "the start of a new Palestinian era."
Siam made the remarks as the parliament was holding its first session since the Jan. 25 parliamentary elections, which Hamas won by garnering 74 seats out of a total of 132 parliament seats up for grabs.
Siam said the new PLC will represent a democratic regime and serve the interests of the Palestinian people.
Siam said his movement will seek to prevent any conflict among Palestinian powers.
Meanwhile, Musheer al-Masri, another Hamas MP in Gaza, said the PLC session is aimed at strengthening the political partnership in the Palestinian political regime, and Hamas will try to bridge differences between different parties.
Atef Edwan, another Hamas MP, said the new stage in the Palestinian politics will start with the new PLC, adding that the movement wishes to find common ground with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to serve the Palestinian people.
