Iran and Russia have reached a rudimental agreement on principles over a Russian compromise proposal of joint uranium enrichment venture, state television quoted a senior negotiator as saying.
"After positive and constructive talks, the two sides reached a rudimental agreement on principles of a common formula, and we will continue our negotiations to further the agreement," said Seyed Ali Hosseini-Tash, Deputy Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
Hosseini-Tash's comments came soon after an Iranian nuclear negotiating team he headed wrapped up two days of negotiations with Russian officials led by Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Ivanov in Moscow.
The two sides discussed Russia's proposal that the two countries establish a joint venture in Russia to enrichment uranium for Iran.
Russia believes that the suggestion could defuse the escalating crisis over the Iranian nuclear issue by securing the Islamic Republic's legal rights while dispersing the international concerns over the country's nuclear program.
The United States and the European Union (EU) have accepted the Russian proposal, both urging Iran to accept the offer and return to a moratorium of its uranium enrichment activities.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Sunday that the Russian compromise plan would be acceptable to Iran after it was amended into a comprehensive offer.
