Survey: Chinese women prefer catering when starting business

Chinese women prefer catering, wholesale and retail, and information service industries when starting their own businesses, according to a survey cited in the latest issue of China's Women's News daily.

When starting a business, Chinese men tend to pick up such sectors as wholesale and retail, industrial processing, and agricultural processing, the survey said.

The survey was about the situation of business start-ups in China and was conducted by an economic program team from the China Central Television (CCTV), a research center of the prestigious Tsinghua University, an MBA Center of the China Agricultural University, and a small and medium-sized enterprises center of the State Development and Reform Commission.

The results of the survey were based on 924 valid questionaries that covered 26 out of the total 31 Chinese provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, the paper said, adding that males accounted for 77 percent of the surveyed and females, 23 percent.

The survey showed that 48 percent of the respondents reported a sum of less than 100,000 yuan (12,422.8 U.S. dollars) for business start-ups, 19 percent reported a sum of between 100,000 and 300,000 yuan.

If you want to start a business of your own, it would be OK with just 100,000 yuan, the survey said.

It also showed that the age span between 26 and 35 is the prime time for business start-ups, accounting for 47 percent of the respondents.

The three most crucial factors in starting one's own business, according to the survey, are grasping market opportunities, winning support from family and friends, and carrying out sufficient market research before starting a business.
