The Brazilian economy last year grew by 2.3 percent from 2004, the state Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics said on Friday.

The expansion of gross domestic product in 2005 under-performed the central bank's forecast of a 2.6 percent rise and the 2.5 percent market estimates, said the institute.
