Poland is clearly at risk of experiencing bird flu "in the near future," Chief Veterinarian Krzysztof Jazdzewski said on Sunday.
Jazdzewski's remarks came one day after Poland decided to tighten control in areas bordering Germany, in an attempt to prevent the entry of bird flu which has killed two birds in a neighbouring German city.
Poland is also considering imposing a hunting ban on wild birds in the areas concerned, he said.
On Saturday, a dead wild duck and a dead swan were tested positive for the lethal H5N1 strain of bird flu virus on the edge of Schwedt, a German city near the border with Poland, triggering a high alert in the country.
Since its first appearance in European Union countries on Feb. 11, the H5N1 strain of bird flu virus has hit eight countries in the integrated zone, including Italy, France, Germany, Greece, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary.
