Turkish environmentalists to launch anti-nuclear campaigns
font size

Turkish environmentalists said they would start nationwide campaigns to reject nuclear energy and nuclear weapons at the end of anti-nuclear convention on Monday.

The four-day "Anti-Nuclear Congress" was attended by 114 environmentalists from 53 Turkish environmental organizations, according to the semi-official Anatolia News Agency.

"All participating organizations reject nuclear energy and nuclear weapons," the congress said in a statement.

"We will hold nationwide peaceful actions to rebuff the recent decision of the government to erect nuclear power plants in Turkey, " the statement said.

"In an effort to inform the public opinion on nuclear risks, we will launch nationwide campaigns, prepare booklets and hold anti- nuclear demonstrations," said the statement.

Earlier this month, the Turkish government decided to construct three nuclear power plants with a total capacity of 5,000 megawatts by 2014.

Turkey imports nearly 70 percent of energy used in the country.
