The Indonesian government said Wednesday it has been drafting a law that will allow the private sector to take part in the country's railway business, thus ending the monopoly by state-run railway firm PT KAI.

"The new law will put an end to the monopoly," Minister of Transportation Hatta Radjasa was quoted by Detikcom news website as saying.

The new railway law is expected to get approval from the House of Representatives this July, the minister said when visiting the southern Java town of Yogyakarta.

But Hatta said foreign investors will be allowed to only become operator for a certain period, maybe 20 to 30 years.
