Laos' Foreign Ministry on Tuesday criticized Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian for his move to cease the functioning of Taiwan's "National Unification Council" and "Guidelines on Unification".
Chen's move was against the fundamental interests of the Chinese people, a foreign ministry spokesman said, according to Laos' Foreign Ministry statement obtained by the Bangkok-based Xinhua Bureau on Wednesday.
Chen's act would lead to cross-Straits tensions and was detrimental to regional peace and stability, said the spokesman.
The Laos government firmly adheres to the one China policy and considers Taiwan an inseparable part of the territory of the People's Republic of China, he said.
Laos firmly supports the Chinese government and people for their efforts to achieve China's peaceful unification and safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as their work to ensure regional peace and stability, said the spokesman.
