Provincial CPPCC members resign in line with regulations: spokesman

The recent resignations of 28 provincial advisors in Guangdong, South China, have been approved in accordance with relevant regulations, a spokesman for the country's top advisory body said Thursday.

Wu Jianmin, spokesman for the Fourth Session of the Tenth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said CPPCC members are duty-bound to participate in CPPCC activities and keep close contact with the masses to voice their wishes and requests.

Wu made the remarks at a press conference ahead of the opening on Friday of the CPPCC National Committee's annual session.

Most of the 28 persons of the Guangdong provincial committee of the CPPCC resigned because of old age or change of work, Wu said. Some people failed to take part in CPPCC activities for too long.

The resignees included Olympic gold medalists Hu Jia and Sun Shuwei.

The CPPCC charter stipulates that either national or local committee members shoulder the duties of political consultation, democratic supervision, and the discussion of state affairs.

Wu, also president of the Foreign Affairs College of China, said that CPPCC members are obliged to honor their role and observe the CPPCC charter.

CPPCC is a patriotic united front organization of the Chinese people, serving as a key mechanism for multi-party cooperation and political consultation.
