Macao's exports and imports rose 39.5 percent and 17.6 percent respectively in January over the same period of 2005, according to official statistics issued on Thursday.

The figures from the Government-run Statistics and Census Services showed that textile and garment exports, which accounted for 82.5 percent of Macao's total export value in the month, witnessed a year-on-year rise of 48 percent.

The United States and the European Union remained as Macao's major export markets in January, jointly making up 75.7 percent of the total export value, the figures showed.

Meanwhile, the special administrative region's major suppliers of imported goods remained mainly in Asia and the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong jointly constituted 52 percent of the total imports value in the month, according to the statistics.
