Shenzhen, a special economic zone in South China's Guangdong Province, planned to invest 22.1 billion yuan (2.75 billion U.S. dollars) in power grid construction in the 2006-2010 period, according to the city's power supply authorities.
The investment will help build some 103 transformer substations which will increase the transformer capacity by 29.39 million kilovolts during the country's 11th-Five-Year Program (2006-2010) for National Economic and Social Development.
Statistics show that the city's demand for electricity is expected to increase to 47.5 billion kwh in 2006, up 11 percent over the previous year.
To deal with the problem, Shenzhen will invest about 4.24 billion yuan in 2006 alone to build 475 kilometers of over 110 kilo-volt electricity lines.
The city's efforts in the project will give it access to a more balanced power supply system around the year of 2007.
