Beijing adds 2,000 more police for 2008 Olympic Games security

The municipal government of Beijing, the national capital, plans to add 2,000 police officers to meet security requirements for the city's hosting of the Olympic Games in 2008, "The Beijing News" reported Friday.

The city had applied to the central authorities for increasing its police force and it was approved now, the daily newspaper quoted Qiang Wei, a deputy secretary of the municipal committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), as saying.

The move is mainly aimed at ensuring security at the 2008 Olympic Games, said Qiang, who is a member of Beijing's delegation to attend the current parliamentary session.

In December 2004, city authorities set up a special leading group to ensure the safety of the Olympic Games. Last year, an information center and a command center, both for the safety of the top sports gala, were established to unify security force resources, the official said.

The authorities have worked out various plans for the safety of the Beijing Olympic Games, focusing on the prevention of terror activities, he said.
