El Salvador's parliamentary elections is underway on Sunday, reports reaching here said.

Polls for 84 seats in the legislature opened at 7 a.m. (1300 GMT) and will close at 5 p.m. (2300 GMT) local time.

Surveys before the polls show that two major parties, ARENA, led by the country's President Antonio Saca, and the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), will compete fiercely in the election.
