China supports Iran-Russia negotiations on nuclear issue, FM spokesman

China always supports Iranian-Russian negotiations on the nuclear standoff and holds that Russia's relevant proposal is a "helpful" attempt to break the current stalemate, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said Tuesday.

China shares a common goal with the mast majority of the international community concerning the Iranian nuclear issue, Qin said at a regular press briefing. China advocates maintaining the seriousness and authority of the international non-proliferation mechanism, opposing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and solving the Iran nuclear standoff through diplomatic means and ways of negotiation.

China believes that there is still room for solving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations, he said. China hopes Iran would fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), take measures which help to increase mutual trust and create conditions for the settlement of the issue.

China also urges the parties concerned to maintain restraint and patience and avoid actions which may further escalate the situation, the spokesman said.

Qin said China supports all the efforts which help to solve the Iranian nuclear issue through negotiations. China hopes that the negotiation between Iran and Russia will achieve progress as soon as possible.

China has been keeping in close contact with the relevant parties and will continue its efforts to play a constructive role in solving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic means, the spokesman said.
