Russian lawmaker restates adherence to one-China policy
font size

Russia sticks to the one-China policy and opposes "Taiwan independence," Konstantin Kosachev, head of the international relations committee of the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, said on Tuesday.

Expressing his views on the Taiwan issue, Kosachev said Russia will unswervingly observe the Russian-Chinese Treaty of Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation signed on July 16, 2001, and adhere to the one-China policy.

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, he said.

Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian declared on Feb. 27 that the "National Unification Council" would "cease to function" and that the "National Unification Guidelines" would "cease to apply."

This, Kosachev said, was actually a move to abandon the "National Unification Council" and the "National Unification Guidelines."

Russia was concerned over the situation, he said, adding that what the Taiwan authorities had done ran against the interests of Taiwan people and would surely cause Taiwan to be isolated by the international community.
