China to launch science promotion week in May

China is to launch a week-long science promotion campaign this May, highlighting the scientific concept of development with priority on innovation.

An official with the Ministry of Science and Technology said here Thursday that the government will focus on publicizing the National Guidelines for Medium-and Long-term Plans for Science and Technology Development among the people during the 2006 Science and Technology Week, which is scheduled from May 20 to 26 throughout the country.

The official said a series of activities including exhibitions, symposia, forums and other events concerning scientific innovation will be held during the campaign.

Meanwhile, science awareness among the youth and rural population will be vigorously promoted, the official said.

The National Guidelines for Medium-and Long-term Plans for Science and Technology Development, adopted by the the Chinese central government, will strive to make China one of the world's leading science powers in the coming 15 years.
