China-ASEAN Commemorative Summit to open in S. China region in October

The China-ASEAN Commemorative Summit will be held in Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in October.

The remarks were made by Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai who was attending the 7th Meeting of China-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Joint Cooperation Committee. The two-day meeting opened on Wednesday.

"This is the first time that China will have the opportunity to hold such a commemorative summit. This year is the 15th anniversary for encouraging dialogue between China and ASEAN and the Year of Friendship and Cooperation Between China and ASEAN," Cui said.

The reason behind the selection of Nanning as the venue rests mainly in the city's geographical advantages. It is adjacent to countries within ASEAN and holds the China-ASEAN Expo annually.

The Joint Cooperation Committee, set up in 1997, is a crucial coordination mechanism between China and the ASEAN.

The committee's seventh meeting focused on the follow-up activities of the China-ASEAN summit held last year and the commemorative activities to mark the 15th anniversary of China-ASEAN relations.
